UK Weather

British people love to talk about the weather. This section helps you to understand the climate in the United Kingdom with some signposts to helpful resources.

Weather in the UK can vary from city to city. It could be one of the most important considerations when choosing which city to settle.  Below is a brief explanation of the weather in different parts of the UK.

The Northern part of the UK includes Cheshire, Cumbria, County Durham, East Riding of Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire (strictly speaking, Scotland is not included - but HKers who want to settle in Glasgow and Edinburgh can also refer to the following information as the climates of these areas are actually quite similar). Big cities which are popular among HKers like Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds etc are in this climate region.

This region has a marine climate, which is generally cooler and more humid. It contains the coldest point in the country. Its average rainfall is relatively high, although still much lower than that in Scotland and Wales. The northern part is close to the coast and consists a fair bit of highlands, so its climate varies considerably.

The Central part of the UK includes Birmingham, Coventry, Derby, Dudley, Leicester, Nottingham, Sandwell, Stoke-on-Trent, Solihull, Telford and Wrekin, Walsall, Wolverhampton.

This region has a marine climate as well but it is milder than the north. It is wet and cloudy in the winter while comfortable and dry in the summer. On winter nights, the temperature can drop to -0.4 degree Celsius; in summer, the temperature can reach as high as 25 degrees Celsius. Since the central part is further from the coast than other regions, it would be warmer with breezes during daytime, and slightly chillier during the evening.

The Southern part of the UK includes Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, West Sussex, East Sussex, Kent, Berkshire, Surrey, Greater London, Essex and Norfolk.

This part is closer to Europe, thus the climate is similar to the continent: occasional cold breezes in winter and generally warmer and more humid in the summer compared to other parts of the UK. In general, the weather is also milder than the rest of the UK.
